Ratropolis DevDiary #1 - New Character

Watsup! It's me Cassel, the lead developer of Ratropolis.

Although Ratropolis is a defense game, there were not many varieties of unit cards available for defense.

So I'm going to introduce 2 new units.


- New unit : Musketeer -



We added the Musketeer, a legendary ranged unit with powerful damage.

Musketeer uses a powerful musket to overpower the enemy from long distance.

However, he is vulnerable in melee and take considerable reload time.

Musketeer is effective against big enemies, but need protection from light assault enemies.

This glass cannon can be placed as a sniper.

There were a lot of concerns about adding ranged unit.

The first unit of Ratropolis, the Guard, is a ranged unit that spears an enemy behind a line of defense.

It was easy to mass guard units behind the defensive wall that acts as a bunker,

With a handful of guards, all the enemies, including the boss, were wiped even before reaching the line of defense.

This made the game easy and monotonous, drastically reducing the relative value of other units.

So we changed the guard's projectile to have a curved trajectory. Reduced the hit rate and reduced the damage.

When it rained, the hit rate was also lowered, and some enemies were hard to defeat by guards alone.

So far it is the best unit in the game...



I was worried that Musketeer would take place of Guard before Nerf. 

So it's designed to be placed in front of the defensive line so that it's not easy to amass, with its high costs.

In order to collect many Musketeers, you need melee units to escort them and economic power to cover high costs.

We will see how it goes...

- New unit : Berserker -




The next unit is Berserker, a normal class melee unit with increased damage. 

While conventional melee units specialize in defense, Berserkers are designed to slice and dice. 

Special ability has been designed to inflict powerful attack when nearby allies fall.


The initial project, the character wielded a huge two-handed axe and its name was warrior. 

However, the image overlapped with Armored Knight, 

We gave it a dual weapon, and a unique Berserk animation.

To create an attractive character, I've been thinking a lot about selecting special ability for Berserker. 

Temporal invincibility, splash, immune to crowd control, were all on the list.. 

I selected faster attack-speed when ally dies, but I'm still less satisfied with current version.

It often lies down. However, increasing its health point may mean another Shield Rat.
